About Us

Hoop Gallery is managed by Surf Coast Art Space (SCAS) Inc, a not-for-profit community organisation.  The Gallery provides a platform for artists to exhibit work to local and visiting audiences. Located in the former recreation centre within the Torquay Surf precinct, Hoop Gallery will open in 2022. The gallery occupies 200 square metres of exhibition and programming space. 



Exhibition Program

The SCAS Committee is seeking expressions of interest from individual artists, artist groups, curators and community groups who have a vision for the creation and presentation visually engaging display of works in the Gallery. Exhibitions may consist of works that are not for sale. Submissions can cover a variety of work including:: interactive, installation or digital art. We welcome expression of interest from people who don’t have a full body of work, as we can bring artists together to create joint exhibitions. 


This expression of interest covers the exhibition period from 1 February – 31 December 2022. 


Gallery Hours

Open: Thursday to Sunday, 10am – 4pm

Closed: Christmas Day and Good Friday

Bump in: Tuesday and Wednesday

Bump out: Monday


Gallery Space 

Entire Space  200 square metres 

Half Space 100 square metres

Quarter Space 50 square metres   

Please note – the gallery has moveable walls giving the spaces flexibility in configuration.

Application eligibility

– Artists in all stages of their career (beginning, emerging, mid-career and established) are eligible to apply.


– Applicants must be living in Australia 


– Exhibitions will be allocated to artists residing within the Surf Coast Shire and artists out of Surf Coast Shire region (at the discretion of the committee).


– Artists cannot exhibit solo exhibitions in the SCAS Exhibition Program two years in a row and can only be included in up-to two group exhibitions per year.


– Exhibition allocation over public and school holidays will be rotated so that there is equity with allocation of exhibitions over peak periods. Allocation of exhibition over peak periods will be at the discretion of the SCAS Committee.


– SCAS Committee members are able to apply on the proviso that they are excluded from the exhibition selection process.


How to Apply

Artists are encouraged to apply online HERE . Hard copies will be accepted if online applications are not possible. Applications will require:


– A completed application, and;


– up to 4 high res (1MB each) different examples (images) of works (preferably of works to be exhibited or similar). 


Applications can be for individual or group exhibitions for either the whole gallery or half the gallery.  Group applications should be made as a single application and include details of all exhibiting artists. 


The SCAS gallery has the potential to hold a number of individual and group exhibitions at the same time.  It will be the responsibility of SCAS to determine the timing of exhibitions and how they will be managed within the space available.


Selection criteria

A selection panel will review the EOI submissions and make selections based on the following guidelines: 


– Works must be original works created by the artist


– Works of high quality and artistic merit presented in a professional manner.


– Clarity of theme/concept of the exhibition.


– Quality of documentation provided.


– Works that fit within the limitations of the exhibition spaces. 


– Ability to manage and deliver the project (support is available for first time exhibitors) 


Applicants should also be aware:


– SCAS encourages performance art, sculpture based installations, light based projections, video and cross media art forms and soundscapes (Note : We currently do not have facilities to deliver moving image works. Artists will need to provide their own projection and screening equipment at this stage)


– SCAS encourages interactive installations (providing that they are supervised).


– All gallery spaces are accessible to the general public and as such all artwork will be scrutinised by the Art Selection Panel as to whether or not they are suitable for public display.  The decision by the Art Selection Panel is final.


– In accepting our offer, the applicant agrees to abide by the gallery OHS standards.


Fee Structure  

Full Gallery Space $150/ week ($450 / 3 week + 3 weekend period)

Half Gallery Space $75 / week ($225 / 3 week + 3 weekend period)

Quarter Gallery Space $50/week ($150 / 3 week + 3 weekend period)


In addition to gallery space hire, commissions will be charged at 20% of sales


SCAS Exhibition Coordinator / Committee will:

– Support and advise exhibitors in the installation and dismantling of exhibitions ensuring standards of exhibition best practice are adhered to.


– Promote the exhibition in relevant SCAS promotional material and platforms where opportunities are available.


– Support an exhibition opening (if applicable), and


– SCAS Committee reserve the right to make final decisions determining the exhibition, exhibition dates and installation of works.


– Drinks / Beverages will be provided by the Committee for sale at opening events (with profits going to the gallery). Light refreshments will be provided. 


Exhibitors’ responsibilities:

– Artists are expected to sit their exhibition (Thursday to Sunday) for three weeks, sell works and record sales and visitor numbers. 


– Where artists are unable to attend they must arrange for someone to attend in their place.


– Works must be ready to hang or displayed with hanging mechanisms (or object mounts as appropriate for installation) by the install date.


– Artists to install exhibition with assistance from Exhibition Co-ordinator


– Cost of transportation to and from the gallery including the install and de-install of their artwork.


– Provide the Exhibition Co-ordinator four high resolution images of the art-work being exhibited and an exhibition statement for promotional purposes.


– Provide the Exhibition Co-ordinator a list of works (title, materials, and dimensions, plus any special exhibiting requirements) at least four weeks prior to the exhibition opening.


– Produce exhibition signage and wall text (with assistance of Exhibition Coordinator).


– Produce a room sheet with information on the artist/s, works and price for sale (with assistance of Exhibition Coordinator).



SCAS would like to advise that due to the current uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, with changing Federal and State advice, the exhibitions scheduled at SCAS may be subject to future cancellation or deferment with limited prior notice. If the exhibition must close due to public health directions, exhibitions that are impacted may be rescheduled at SCAS discretion.
