16 Dec ART SPACE PLANS BIGGER AND BETTER OFFERINGS FOR SURF COAST ARTISTS!
Dear Surf Coast Art Space Supporter,
Whilst our doors have remained shut throughout most of 2020, there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes that we are very excited to share with you here.
Committee of Management
Our Committee became incorporated in November to allow us to transition Art Space towards financial independence. This will enable us to work directly with local creatives to plan a rich and diverse program of skills development and exhibition opportunities via the income we raise from memberships, exhibition and commission fees, and grants.
The Current Space
With our 4-year lease due to end next June and no confirmation that it will continue – and as Council prepare to hand over the keys to the former Sport and Recreation Centre in Beach Road, Torquay for the community to use as a Multi Arts Centre (The MAC) in early 2021 – we have come to agree that there are greater opportunities for Surf Coast Art Space if it moves its operations to The MAC.
Whilst we are aware of how important Art Space Anglesea is to artists of all levels from across our community, the reality remains: the size of the space, location and nature of the lease limit what we can do there.
The MAC will be a community-led venue that offers the opportunity for multidisciplinary local artists (including visual and performing artists) to develop and present their work to audiences It will include a gallery, a shop, a theatre and a programming space. Its mission is to amplify and develop the visual and performing arts on the Surf Coast, for the benefit of artists and the community.
For the last 12 months, fellow Art Spacer Daniela Rodriguez and I, along with six other dedicated Multidisciplinary Arts Collective members, have been working towards a Management Plan for the site. We have determined what a space of this size would offer the visual arts (it’s a lot more than a shopfront– see below!), and this, coupled with the recent announcement of $240,000 in the State budget for the conversion of the building into an arts space, has seen our Committee vote unanimously to move Art Space to the MAC once our lease expires.
After much discussion and research, the Art Space Committee believe that pursuing The MAC opportunity brings huge benefit for artists from right across the Shire, including:
-The gallery space at The MAC will be four times the size of the current Art Space in Anglesea, with professional-grade lighting, moveable exhibition furniture and appropriate storage, workshop and meeting space.
-The new centre offers a brilliant opportunity for Art Space to expand our current platform to include a multiplicity of artists including: digital, spoken work, installation, and sound artists as well as community arts, professional development and other programming and social practice.
As part of Art Space at MAC we will launch a collective artists’ shop offering customers, including the 60000 + per annum from the Visitor Information Centre next door, the opportunity to purchase a local hand-made piece of art, souvenir or gift in a shop-front that understands how to display and present artwork to best advantage. Taking all of this into account, and after many months of deliberation, we believe that together we have come up with a plan that will bring great benefit to artists, creatives, and audiences throughout the region and we would love to have you come on board to help us realise our vision.
